Did some birding in Kinney County this past weekend with Kathy Bader. We
did about two miles along Las Moras Creek at Fort Clark, some private
ranchland just west of town, and a whole day along Pinto Creek. Highlights
for the area included:
-Juvenile White-tailed Hawk (county record?)
-Blue Jay (long-awaited county bird for me!)
-Black-throated Gray Warbler
-Green-tailed Towhee
-Scaled Quail
-Lark Buntings (large numbers this year)
-Kingfisher trifecta (all from my back porch)
-Black-tailed Gnatcatcher
-American Robin
-White-throated Sparrow

Also, I understand many birders have had bad experiences at Fort Clark for
various reasons (that I have not personally experienced since I thankfully
don't have to deal with FC staff when I visit). That includes the
introduction of a fee for birding there. If any of you who have had issues
would like to email me about what happened, I am going to try to draft a
letter to the board to let them know that people are being driven away. I
hate to see people pass up this already under-birded oasis. In the
meantime, if ANYONE would like to visit Fort Clark, please just let me know
and I can get you through the gate without having to pay any fee for
birding there. My email is bryanrcalk@xxxxxxxxx.
