Greetings All: On Friday, 28 December 2012, Rich Kostecke and I spent most of the day exploring Hale County. Between the two of us we spotted 64 species of birds in this depressingly drought-stricken county, faring best at parks in Plainview and at outlying playas in the afternoon - after the daily thaw. Highlights included the following: At Plainview Apartments Playa (19th and Yonkers - best accessed from the alley between 18th and 19th): 2 Carolina Wrens, 1 Swamp Sparrow, 1 Fox Sparrow, 2 White-throated Sparrows, 3 Harris's Sparrows, and 1 immature male INDIGO BUNTING (spotted by Rich, confirmed by Anthony - the MOST STARTLING bird of the day). At the Plainview Duck Pond (Travis Trussel Park) 6 female and 14 male Wood Ducks. From Interstate 27 - just north of Hale Center: 1 adult Golden Eagle. At the open pond along CR 275 - just west of I27: 172 Greater White-fronted Geese, 90 Snow Geese, and 36 Ross's Geese. At Abernathy City Park: 1 female Common Merganser. At various stops along the way - at least 5 Rough-legged Hawks. Dropping generally southward from Highway 70, along FM 789, CR 125, CR EE, CR 235, and FM to Petersburg: thousands of longspurs including at least 350 Lapland Longspurs and 150 McCown's Longspurs. No Chestnut-collared Longspurs were positively identified - but it is hard to believe, given the sheer number of longspurs - that there weren't a few out there. Folk who have been waiting for a good year to chase longspurs in the southern reaches of the Panhandle: this appears to be it!
