Hi, all! Wow! It was a MUCH nicer day today at Hornsby Bend, although the temps were still in the 30's to start off with (so a big surprise was seeing an American Lady batting around on the auto drive)! Checking the trees around the Admin building yielded a Red-breasted Nuthatch for the trip, as well as a tailless "Dixon's" Titmouse. Still dipped on the goldeneye (although the Canvasback was still there), but the photo and recording ops couldn't be beat; a couple of "conversing" Carolina Chickadees really put on a show! The Upper Ridge Trail gave you a wonderful view of the Colorado River where there were lots of wigeon and Gadwall. The real action was at the Platt Lane trailhead, though, as the lost Buff-bellied Hummer posed, and on the Gravel Pit loop I kicked up a Brown Creeper for the trip! Sparrows on the entrance road were very cooperative with Song, White-crowned, and Lincoln's all posing nicely. Headed over to scout out Bastrop and Buescher State Parks after that, and it was like having flashbacks of the Cedar Fire that hit the Laguna and Cuyamaca Mountains so hard in San Diego! But I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of spared habitat, and Pine Warblers were all over! As was reported last week, there were Hairy and Pileated Woodpeckers along the scenic road, and picked up Blue Jay for the trip at the Buescher entrance. I can't wait to really do it justice tomorrow morning!
