Greetings All: On Sunday, 21 December 2014, ten birders worked the area-restricted count at Muleshoe NWR, tallying 74 species (well above the record low of 30 species but a ways from the record high of 90 species - maybe another wet year or two will bring things around). Anthony Hewetson and Ellen Hildebrandt had perimeter owling and the refuge east of 214. Highlights from their area were: 1 Wood Duck, 6 Redheads, 1 Eared Grebe, 1 Virginia Rail, 1 Short-eared Owl, 2 Common Ravens, 11 McCown's Longspurs, and 2 Common Yellowthroats. Rob Lee, Tome Dolan, and Jan Jannett had the northern highlands. Highlights from the highlands were: 18 Scaled Quails and an unidentified sapsucker. Cameron Carver, Craig Carver, and Manuel De Leon had The Rim and Upper and Lower Goose Lakes. Highlights from their area were: 2 Scaled Quails, 1 Rock Wren, and 5 Chestnut-collared Longspurs. Justin Bosler and Phllip Kite had The Campground/Headquarters area as well as Upper and Lower White Lakes. Highlights from their area were: 1 Snow Goose, 1 Common Merganser, 10 Scaled Quails, 1 Rough-legged Hawk, 1 Greater Yellowlegs, 1 DUNLIN, 1 Short-eared owl, 1 House Wren, 2 Brown Thrashers, 200 Lapland Longspurs, 25 McCown's Longspurs, 1 Fox Sparrow, and 1 Pine Siskin. Later in the day, we were allowed to wander up to the playa southeast of the Goose Lakes Complex to see the Dunlin. This gave Cameron Carver, Craig Carver, Manuel De Leon, Anthony Hewtson, Ellen Hildebrandt, Phillip Kite, and Rob Lee a chance to look at this stunningly out of place and season bird!
