This morning (at about 8am) the Rose-throated Becard at Santa Ana was, incongruously, among the starlings and blackbirds on the metal communications tower by the picnic area. It's about the last place I would have expected it, but it's apparently a favorite perch. Other highlights of the morning's birding with Carolyn Broussard, Janet Landry & Cindy Garza included: Black-bellied Whistling-Duck - 1400+ on the Arroyo Colorado at Estero Llano Grande SP; Cinnamon Teal - pair at the Anacua Unit of Las Palomas WMA; scaup sp - a pair at Estero looked, from shape & structure, to be textbook Greaters but the drake's nail & flank pattern were more similar to Lessers' and we didn't see the wing-pattern; Bufflehead - fem/1st year at the Ebony Unit of Las Palomas WMA (no sign of the Ruddy Duck family in the ten minutes or so we were there); Long-billed Curlew - flock of c70 over Estero; King Rail - singleton calling at Anacua; Peregrine Falcon - juv at Progreso grain silos; Ringed Kingfisher - pair at Anacua; Green Kingfisher - male at Rio Rico pumphouse & Black Phoebe - pair on the Rio Grande at the Rio Rico pumphouse (at the very SE corner of Hidalgo County - they are rare this far east).
