Immature Broad-winged Hawk.   From Red-shouldered by barred secondaries  and no
pale crescents at base of primaries, and from Red-tailed by no dark patagial
mark on underwing.

Subject: [texbirds] Hawk ID?

[cid:image001.gif@01D62605.F95E09F0]
Hi all,

This hawk was circling overhead in nw Houston May 9, 2020.  I want to default
to Red-shouldered, but it looks like an immature in heavy primary molt. Is it a
one-year-old Red-shouldered?  Too early for a hatch-year? Dark Swainson's
crossed my mind, but the underwing pattern doesn't fit.

Thanks for any help.

Ross
