This morning, with much better weather than yesterday, my friend, Cinda
Crosley, and I tried again for the Hammond's Flycatcher at Dickerson's
Bottom Fishing Access in San Gabriel WMA, Williamson County. We looked and
listened for about an hour before Cinda spotted it on a low small tree lying
on the ground about 15 feet from the edge of the water. I soon got on it as
it flew further back and fly-catched around several low shrubs at the edge
of the steep embankment on the north side of the river (same side as the
steps). We first observed it at 9:05. About eight birders with Williamson
Audubon Group had been looking for a few minutes with us and had given up
and started up the steps. I quickly ran to call them back and they were all
able to get onto the Hammond's, as well as alert other birders in the
vicinity of the fishing area. Soon several other small groups of birders
arrived and Cinda and I left about 9:20. For those wanting more information
on the location, take the stairs down toward the water and look on the left
side of the path, scanning the small shrubs near the water as well as
further back. During the time we were there, the bird remained low - never
more than 5 feet above the ground - and it swooped down to the ground a few
times. It was very actively feeding.
