The last two mornings about 1:00 am, I have awakened to the gentle Hoo Hoooo
Hoooo Hoooo of a Great Horned Owl. I am in the Brentwood neighborhood near the
intersection of Burnet Road and Justin Lane in north central Austin. I have
occasionally seen them when out walking in the early evening. It is fascinating
how such a fearsome predator can have such a gentle call. And, it is comforting
that at least this species and screech owls have adapted so well to urban life.
No doubt the GRHOs will contribute to resolving Austin’s Chihuahua problem. ;-)
