TexBirders,
On a mild and foggy Friday morning Ladd and I spent a couple of very pleasant
hours birding mostly the Grover’s Bend area of Riverside Park, Victoria. It was
very birdy with many woodpeckers/sapsuckers, a couple of Pine Siskins,
Golden-crowned Kinglet, Winter Wren, a Summer Tanager, a big winter flock with
Pine, Wilson’s and male Black-throated Green Warbler and a few sparrow species
incl. several Song Sparrows (they are unusually plentiful in our area this
winter as are the Summer Tanagers). A young Bald Eagle flew from across the
river right above us screaming at the top of his lungs. He later disappeared
back across the river, still talking, and we heard a response from maybe a
parent. We think he wanted to be fed.
Had we worn our Goretex shoes we could have walked through the wet grass and
some mud even closer to the river and found still more. Next time …
