Hi all: Today saw quite a few flocks of geese going over or past the tower, including a Canada Goose that honked once directly overhead, but was not in the flock of White-fronteds that I could find up there (at least, it's not in the pix I took). With the passage of the cold front late this afternoon, geese continue to pass over -- a couple flocks while I've been typing this message! 'Twas a sparrow-palooza at the tower today, with Chipping, Clay-colored, Field, Vesper, Savannah, Song, White-throated, and two forms of White-crowned (Eastern and Gambel's). The three species of Spizella, the Vesper, and an Indigo Bunting shunned the provided 'bird' seed in favor of the abundant grass seeds in the bird-feeding area. (I've always wondered: you plant grass seed, grass grows; what happens when you plant bird seed?) With a 'brisk' N wind and colder temps tomorrow, I'm expecting lots of birds to fly by, including lots of ducks (which are usually most common in the first hour of the day) and geese, perhaps American Robins, and maybe even a hawk or two.
