I did a run around on the coast between Lafitte's and High Island
yesterday. The usual migrant traps were essentially empty except for
Cardinals and Catbirds. It seemed like the places to visit were the
marshes and the shoreline.
I ended the day without any expectations and High Island and at first I
wasn't
disappointed. It was emptier than I've ever seen it. The only thing of
any note was a humongous Alligator Snapping Turtle that came crawling out
of Prothonatory Pond that came to within five feet, I was the one that
backed off.
Just as I was leaving a kind birder from Colorado told me that she had just
seen a Cape May Warbler across the street beside the Audubon Society
House. After less than two minutes it briefly
reappeared and was snacking on Mulberries.
There were all the expected shorebirds and they were very cooperative.
Most of them were very happy to pose for photos, or were too tired to
care. Loads of Avocets and Dowitchers at Bolivar flats and all the tern
species. One of the Long-tailed Ducks snoozed the whole afternoon on the
beach oblivious to the dozens spectators.
