Dear Austin Area Texbirders (or any more distant Texbirder willing to help),
Westwood High School students are very excited about a pair of Black
Vultures that have chosen to nest on their campus. We have been emailing
back and forth about steps they can take to keep the birds happy while
still being able to enjoy and learn from the process unfolding in their own
"back yard". One thing I recommended was putting up web cam so that they
could watch the action happen without disturbing the birds. Apparently they
have gotten approval to do so from school admin, have a dedicated computer
ready to go, and a budget of $350 (see email below). However, they would
really like to have some input/help/advice from someone with experience
using/installing web cams, and that is where the birding community can
help. Is anyone out there willing to meet with and help these students?
It would be an absolutely wonderful way to connect with these young
birders-in-the-making.

Please contact me by email or phone (512-663-8319) if you can help.

Thank you,
Noreen Baker
Austin, Tx

Hi Ms. Baker,

We really appreciate all of your help.
We have set a perimeter blocking of the nesting site and we are planning
on getting in touch with Marya Fowler to discuss the school habitat
certification.

We are also planning on setting a web cam, but we were wondering if you
could connect us with somebody who has experience, especially since we have
several restrictions to work around (we need to make sure that nobody can
steal the equipment).
Our budget for the project is $350, and we already have a desktop we can
dedicate to the project.

Also, do you have any recommendations on how to shelter the nesting site
from rain?
Is it something we should definitely do or is it not a real threat? Above
the nesting area is a tree but it won't protect the area much from the rain.

One last thing, what's the best way to distinguish the two? We have a
general idea but we aren't really sure.

Again, sorry for the late response.

I also added a couple photos of where it is. I can send more detailed ones
if you'd like, but these will hive you a general idea.

Regards,
Akash Thakkar
