First, please heed Alan's cautionary note; many years back, when I was foolish enough to climb trees to band Great Horned Owl nestlings, I was frequently subjected to attacks by the parents. Second, I think half-inch dowels may be too small, perhaps 3/4" r even 1". Third, back in the '80's, we had a pair nest on a second-story ledge of our library [TAMU] successfully - no perches anywhere near the nest site.
