Texbirders,
Yesterday (05/18/16), I decided to visit the agricultural area of the Laureles
division of King Ranch (Kleberg County) for a couple of hours mid-day to see
what may be out there given the abundant rains that had fallen in that area
over the past several days. Despite the limited time, I still located some
interesting birds. There were extensive areas of partially grown cotton and
sorghum fields that were flooded yet difficult to see any shorebirds that might
be feeding below the plant canopies, so most viewing was in the flooded areas
adjacent to the ranch road. Highlights for me included Fulvous Whistling-Duck
(6), Hudsonian Godwit (9), and Yellow-headed Blackbird (6). I was also
surprised at the number of Avocets (34) seen as well. I normally encounter a
few but this was significantly more than normal. Amusingly, I had fleeting
looks at two female ruby-throated/Black-chinned hummingbirds flying north just
over the tops of the sorghum/cotton crops.
