Greetings All: I completed the Plains I BBS (Yoakum County) on 23 June 2013. The route which runs eastward to the Yoakum/Terry County line from a point north of Plains and then southward along the county line is in horrible shape this year. It is located in a portion of the county that has not benefited from recent rains (in dramatic contrast with the Plains II route - just 20 miles to the west) and, to make matters worse, is undergoing 'improvements' related to agriculture and energy extraction. I actually had a run of five stops in a row during which I tallied no wildlife at all - not even a Horned Lark to be spotted on the desolate sand- and wind-swept, almost sterile cotton fields. I think this is probably the worst list that this route has ever produced for me. The entire list of critters seen on the Plains I BBS: 4 Pipevine Swallowtails 1 Black Swallowtail 4 Checkered Whites 1 Lyside Sulphur 1 Long-nosed Snake 4 Northern Bobwhites 1 Swainson's Hawk 1 Killdeer 53 Rock Pigeons 3 Eurasian Collared Doves 74 Mourning Doves 2 Common Nighthawks 2 American Kestrels 73 Western Kingbirds 1 Loggerhead Shrike 10 Chihuahuan Ravens 23 Horned Larks 14 Barn Swallows 1 Curve-billed Thrasher 2 Cassin's Sparrows 15 Lark Sparrows 1 Grasshopper Sparrow 1 Blue Grosbeak 2 Red-winged Blackbirds 2 Eastern Meadowlarks 6 Western Meadowlarks 18 Great-tailed Grackles 1 Brown-headed Cowbird 1 Bullock's Oriole 4 House Finches 2 House Sparrows 2 Black-tailed Prairie Dogs 1 Coyote Anthony 'Fat Tony' Hewetson; Lubbock Edit your Freelists account settings for TEXBIRDS at //www.freelists.org/list/texbirds Reposting of traffic from TEXBIRDS is prohibited without seeking permission from the List Owner
