We have hosted a colony of purple martins on Kramer Lane in north Austin,
Texas for 14 years. The housing in the colony consists of one 14-unit
aluminum apartment house and two 12-gourd units. This year, we had 34 pairs
of purple martins that occupied the site. As of June 11 of this year, a
significant number of this year's purple martin nestlings had already
fledged. Although there is still activity at the site, the majority of the
nestlings have fledged as of 6-23-16. A check of the apartment house and
gourd units late on the afternoon of 6-23-16 revealed nestlings remaining
(and one late nest of unhatched eggs!) in 13 out of 34 compartments that
were occupied this year.
