Today I had the pleasure of observing at close quarters the Flame-colored
Tanager and a surprise Audubon's Oriole at Lions/Shelly Park in Refugio. I saw
both birds from the bridge not far from the trailhead. I saw the tanager
initially at about 2:30 pm, and when I returned to the area later the oriole
appeared, feasting on caterpillars in the same tree with the tanager. just
past 3:30 pm. The tanager was heavily streaked on the back, had an orange
forehead, dark-bordered auriculars and white spots on the tertials. Photos
of both birds (hopefully) can be found here: Winter 2015-2016
