Erik,
The Flame-colored Tanager has black streaks on a
colored back, unlike the grayish-unstreaked-back on yer
Western Tanager.  FCT has a well defined dark auricular
patch unlike your Western Tanager photo.  FCT has a
completely different bill shape, with much more obvious
teeth than your Western Tanager.  It has white spots
(albeit mostly out of view and worn) visible on tertials
unlike your Western Tanager.  It is a different color of
orange-red on the head and has quite a different
structure overall.  Big blocky head vs. small rounded
one.  I am sure there is more, but am weak on FCT.  One
looks like a Flame-colored Tanager, the other a Western.

TexBirders,

I have followed the posts about the Flame-colored Tanager at Lions Park
in Refugio County with much interest. I have to be honest...if I saw
this bird, Flame-colored Tanager would not immediately come to mind.

I am not questioning the ID, and am not looking to cause any trouble,
but could someone explain why this bird is not just a Western Tanager?

For reference I have included links to the three sets of photos
previously posted below. I have also included links to two Western
Tanager photos of my own which seem to look remarkably similar.
