Spent a full day of birding around the Corpus area. We started at daybreak at the impoundment where the two tundra swans were being seen, but they were not there. We ran into several duck hunters that offered to let us look on their property, claiming they had seen them on Wednesday. Unfortunately they wouldn't be able to let us on until after their hunt, which we could t have waited around for. So we moved on to Port Aransas to find the lesser blacked gull that is usually found between beach markers 40 and 60. We eventually found him at marker 50 or 51, lifer for both Jeff and I! Such a pretty bird too, he entertained us for about 10 minutes. We moved on down the beach, hoping to find the California or glaucous gull. We drove every inch of beach from the Port Aransas south jetty to the Padre Island National Seashore no driving boundary. And we drove the Packery Channel south jetty to the PINS section twice! Unfortunately we saw neither of the two target birds or any other wierd gulls. We did however have multiple large groups of eared grebes in the surf, sometimes 30 in a "pod". We also saw a very active couple that were doing the horizontal tango in a car on the beach, no shame at all. We moved off the beach and headed inland in a search for burrowing owl that have been seen in the farmland south of corpus, after checking every culvert and high spot we finally found one in a round bale patch off the east side of county road 55, just sound of 2444. I think I saw a precious report of one being here as well. He didn't come up at first, but when a small mocker stated scolding us he made his appearance. Overall it was a fun but tiring trip, lots of sitting which my legs don't like. Have a Merry Christmas and happy birding! -- Clayton & Linsey Leopold Texas City Edit your Freelists account settings for TEXBIRDS at //www.freelists.org/list/texbirds Reposting of traffic from TEXBIRDS is prohibited without seeking permission from the List Owner
