Still chilly when I got to C.M. this morning, so I went straight to the lower pond. There was a Red-tailed Hawk on the entrance road and a Red-shouldered Hawk at the pond. A large group of Bufflehead were diving and the males were occasionally taking runs at one another. Also a single Coot, PB Grebe, and small group of Gadwall. There was a Great Blue Heron in the short vegetation on the north side, and another sitting on the dam of the upper pond. A few large groups of Cedar Waxwings flew over. I ventured into the field south of the pond, a White-throated Sparrow sat up and a Lincoln's Sparrow ruffled its wet feathers with its foot. There was a ton of Myrtle's in the trees just to the west edge of the field. A group of finches in a bare tree back by the pond had an American Goldfinch. I headed back up the dirt road and ran into a spectacular mixed flock just past the pond where a Live Oak still has leaves. First, a horde of Carolina Chickadees and a Downy Woodpecker, then the Hybrid Titmice and Myrtle's came in. I got lucky and found a Golden-crowned Kinglet, then a Great Horned Owl swooped out and perched just beyond the "creek." http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S16011379 Sunny at L.G. but little activity in the parking lot. A family of Pied-billed Grebes was in the laguna, and I watched one Belted Kingfisher, hearing another. A Swamp Sparrow sat on a log in the reeds, and a male Common Yellowthroat came out briefly. Walking around to the lake for a couple Ring-billed Gulls and male Red-winged Blackbirds. A small mixed flock at the Gazebo yielded a Downy Woodpecker, Chickadees and Titmice, Myrtle's, a Blue-headed Vireo that flew in from across the laguna, and numerous Orange-crowned Warblers. They were interesting to observe as I noticed a wide variety and colors, from gray above and yellow bellow to almost uniformly yellow-green, and some drab while others quite bright. http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S16011619 Elliott Gordon Austin, TX Edit your Freelists account settings for TEXBIRDS at //www.freelists.org/list/texbirds Reposting of traffic from TEXBIRDS is prohibited without seeking permission from the List Owner
