Greetings,

I spent Friday and Saturday tagging along/guiding Javelina hunts on one of the
eastern portions of the Callaghan Ranch in Webb County. I got in some
semi-serious birding whilst hunting. I didn't kick out anything too exciting,
but since this is an area that is not often birded I will post some of the
birds.

Friday morning started out with Audubon's Orioles singing at camp. I also
encountered some immigrants while viewing the Orioles (best of luck to them).
Least Sandpiper, Ring-necked Duck and Mexican Mallard on the tanks. I didn't
see much else that day other than the normal birds - Northern Cardinals and
Pyrrhuloxia, Black-throated Sparrow, Verdin, Green Jay, Cactus Wren, etc.
Returned to camp to find a Great-horned Owl serenading us from the trailer roof.

Saturday was a bit better. Started out with an Ash-throated Flycatcher. I enjoy
seeing and hearing that species, it was like reuniting with a good friend. I
found a nice grassy wetlands area that kicked out multiple Eastern Phoebes. The
desert scrub next to these wetlands held two Sage Thrashers. Most of the same
from the day before. Did get to watch an aerial battle between two Crested
Caracara. Very vocal. Very awesome.

Sunday morning I ran down to Laredo to knock White-collared Seedeater off the
year list. I decided North Central Park would be the best option as they had
several warbler species I wanted to get on.
I found one female White-collared Seedeater. I got a Nessy-like photo.
Also had Black-throated Green and Black-throated Gray Warblers. Both of these
had been found previously by other observers and was the main reason I wanted
to visit the park - gotta love winter warblers. The park was excellent. I
missed a few region specialties, but no worries as I was in a hurry to get back
to DFW for the Super Bowl. Sad for the 49'ers. You know, Ray Lewis deserved
another Super Bowl - nothing like a double murder and deer antler spray.

Best of luck to the Laredo Birding Festival. Should be a good one.
