This past spring a group of volunteers, in conjunction with the Houston Audubon
Society, surveyed the Heights in Houston for Red-vented Bulbuls. They found 29
bulbuls on 11 routes. For an in-depth look at the survey, visit the Houston
Audubon website. This is the link to the Red-vented Bulbul page, where you can
find the survey report:

We know the birds have a far wider distribution than the Heights, so we are
asking birders to help with a very different effort. The Fall Bulbul Bonanza
will be on the weekend of Sept 17-18. On those days, we would like people to go
out and search for the roaming flocks of Red-vented Bulbuls that form in the
fall. It would not be surprising to find flocks of 12 or more. Most reports
have been within the 610 Loop of Houston, but birds are regular as far north as
the Greenspoint area, southeast to Robert C. Stuart Park on Bellfort, and as
far east as the Baytown Nature Center. There are also outliers well beyond
these general areas.
We would like you to visit your local park, habitat patch or neighborhood
birding route and report back. Let us know:
* How long you were at the location and if you did or did not find
bulbuls.
* If you found bulbuls
o Where were they found (GPS coordinates, intersection, etc)?
o How many bulbuls were seen or heard?
o What were they doing?
o What type of tree or shrub were they utilizing? (Like many tropical species
they frequently flock to fruiting trees this time of year. We are very
interested in what type of fruit they utilize.)
During the survey, we found talking to local residents often led us to birds,
so don't be bashful. Most of the residents we encountered in the Heights were
curious and interested in the birds and our survey efforts.
If you intend to participate in the Fall Bulbul Bonanza, please let us know so
we have an idea of how well attended and widely distributed the survey will be.
