Greetings All:
I spent about three and a half hours in Hockley County this morning -
mostly checking to see if the Brown Pelican reported yesterday by Leanna
Smith was still present.
The Brown Pelican was present at Brashear's Park and appeared to be fully
flightworthy. I alerted the SPWRC to the bird's presence as visiting Brown
Pelican to our region have a history of needing assistance.
Other highlights included: 7 Blue-winged Teals along Alamo Road, 10
Blue-winged Teals at the Bison Road Playa, 12 Cinnamon Teals at the Bison
Road Playa, 4 Cinnamon Teals at the Smyer Playa, 10 Canvasbacks south of
Smyer, 2 Redheads at the Bison Road Playa, 7 Redheads south of Smyer, 15
Black-necked Stilts at the Bison Road Playa, 62 American Avocets at the
Bison Road Playa, 2 American Avocets south of Smyer, 2 American Avocets at
the Smyer Playa, 5 Greater Yellowlegs at the Bison Road Playa, 2 Lesser
Yellowlegs at the Bison Road Playa, 4 Least Sandpipers at the Bison Road
Playa, 2 Long-billed Dowitchers south of Smyer, 1 continuing Red-naped
Sapsucker at Levelland City Park, 1 Merlin just west of Smyer, 1 Peregrine
Falcon eating a Green-winged Teal at the Bison Road Playa, 1 Say's Phoebe
at the Ropesville Cemetery, 2 Tree Swallows at the Smyer Playa, 2 American
Pipits along Alamo Road, 2 American Pipits at the Bison Road Playa, 2
Chipping Sparrows at the Ropesville Cemetery, and 2 Pine Siskins at
Levelland City Park,
Brown Pelican, Swainson's Hawk, Least Sandpiper, Peregrine Falcon, Tree
Swallow, and Chipping Sparrow were all additions to my 2016 Hockley County
list and I got photographs of all six species - keeping the
photographed/seen ratio high.
