Texbirders,
Brown Boobies continue to be present on the small gas wells in Espiritu Santo
Bay, Calhoun Co. We snuck up on six of them 2 days ago on the way home to Port
O'Connor after a very successful birding day on Matagorda Island. (Photos
posted on facebook Texbirds).
Eastern Kingbirds, Rose-breasted Grosbeaks and Baltimore Orioles were always in
view, sometimes in flocks of up to 20. Highlights of the land-based birding
were a male Bobolink, male Western Tanager, male Bullock's Oriole,
Yellow-headed Blackbirds, Blackpoll and Bay-breasted Warblers. Warblers were in
small numbers and only a total of 10 species. I believe most of them did not
make it through the ferocious front of the previous day.
And then there was this red-eyed type vireo that I felt needed a closer look
but didn't want to show itself out in the open. So we played Red-eyed,
Yellow-green and Black-whiskered songs to it. Totally ignored the first 2 and
nearly attacked us - 3 times in a row - on the last one. Sure made us think but
we still didn't get a definitive look.
