It has been quite a week for Broad-winged Hawks passing through, mainly when
the wind is coming from the north.
Tuesday last week with the strong Norther behind them kettles came through all
day, starting at 9 am. I was out for an hour at 4:30 pm and again at 6:30 pm
and each time on average six kettles passed by every ten minutes. The kettles
contained about 200 Broad-winged Hawks in each. A small number of Turkey
Vultures were with them at the end of the day. I counted 10 TV in my photos.
Many Broad-winged Hawks spent the night in the greater Alamo area.
Wednesday morning by 9 am there were a dozen kettles aloft also moving south to
south east at about 6 kettles per ten minutes. We climbed the tower at Santa
Ana N.W.R. and had more great views of more kettles, some of which were clearly
larger, perhaps 500 birds. These came through until noon. I saw only
Broad-winged Hawks.
Sunday morning other birders reported more kettles passing through.
This morning, Monday, for 30 minutes at 9 am I counted 17 kettles move through,
averaging 200 to 300 birds. I saw only Broad-winged Hawks.
