Yesterday(05/03), I spent a wonderful 2 hours Birding Blucher Park in downtown
Corpus Christi. It was one of those mornings that reminds me of the feeling I
used to get on Christmas mornings as a child.
I Ran into my Friend Mary King. We tallied 14 Warbler species, highlighted by
Bay-breasted, Golden-winged, Kentucky, Ovenbird, Magnolia, Wilson's,
Chestnut-sided, and American Redstart.
I must mention that there were numerous American Redstart and Magnolia males -
it was so cool! It seemed as if there was at least one of each species in every
third tree - it was so much fun...
Also had Yellow-throated Vireo - sadly the only one I have found this Spring;
and Grey-cheeked Thrush.
I want to give a heartfelt and huge thanks to the amazing Folks that give their
own time on Monday evenings to cleanup and maintain this amazing patch of
Birder's Heaven, located as I mentioned in downtown Corpus Christi. These folks
do an awesome job keeping the Park in shape for Birders - and more importantly,
for the Birds themselves... Thank you'all so so much - you are awesome...
Anyone who has or will, Bird at Blucher, owes you people a very huge thanks...
On a self-serving side note: the Bay-breasted Warbler made it 30 Warbler
species for the Spring. This is a goal for me each Spring(the Hawk Watch keeps
me too busy in the Fall), and I feel so fortunate to live in an area like South
Texas, where that number is even possible.
Monday(05/02), at Polywog Ponds, I had Olive-sided Flycatcher, Eastern
Kingbird, and the sharpest Philadephia Vireo so far this Spring. Also 30
Mississippi Kites - including a few so low that in my youth I am pretty sure I
could have jumped up and touched.
Last but by no means least, on 04/30, my wife Libby and I took Libby's mother
Pat for a tour of Bastrop State Park.
The Trees of Bastrop have made a stunning comeback from a devastating fire 4
years or so back - living proof of Nature's amazing resiliency.
Birding highlights at Bastrop State Park included 3 species of Woodpeckers(
Red-headed, Red-bellied, and Downy). Also Summer Tanager, Blue-headed Vireo,
Eastern Bluebird, Carolina Chickadee, Pine Warbler, and several Mississippi
Kites.
The Red-headed Woopeckers(we had a pair), were a special treat - truly
resplendent Birds.
Happy Birding,
