The black-tailed godwit was spotted by Brad McKinney this morning and in the scope when I and a visitor Chuck Berthoud showed up about 7:45 AM. The bird is on the East side of CR 227 in the pond closest to FM 2004. It was feeding a lot and preening and was always in the water. It would hold its wings up infrequently, but often enough to insure the ID (white underwing) if you watch it carefully for a few minutes. The lighting was not optimal in the AM, but will improve during the day and be best in the late PM. The levee and bushes make observing from the side of the road difficult and for the time being birders have permission from the USFWS to walk up to the levee. Try to stay within the ropes. There is a narrow path existing to the levee- use this one and don't create others. The godwit was positioned about half-way out into the pond to about 2/3 of the distance to the far side. The county's mosquito plane flew low over the area with the spray nozzles on and caused the godwit and others to flush. Within a few minutes the godwit was spotted in the same pond, but closer to FM 2004. Tom Morris Lake Jackson
