While approaching the first culvert/slough going north on 8 Mile Rd. around
3:15 p.m. today, a bird plummeted to the ground in the bordering marsh on
the east side of the road. Apparently, a female Black Scoter hit one of
the power lines. She appears to have injured her left wing. Eventually,
she made her way into the slough. Passing back by about 90 minutes later,
she was still paddling around in the same area (in the stream, maybe 30
yards east of the culvert), seemingly alert and with good head and neck
posture and mobility. Still, I rather doubt she'll fly soon, so might be a
good opportunity to see this bird at fairly close range. Pictures
available on request.
