December has been an interesting month at Kleb Woods. It began early with a Nov 26th record for Fox Sparrow, only the second record for the park. Dec 6, Sumita Prasad came out to present a hummingbird ID program and band hummingbirds. She managed to catch four. The most interesting bird was the adult male Rufous which she previously captured here on Oct 26. It had been banded as a hatch year bird last winter in Florida. It has now been present here since before Oct 26th. It is the only adult male Rufous at the center. She also recaptured an adult female Allen's Hummingbird that she originally banded here on Oct 26th. We spent some time studying this bird and photographing it. We are now able to recognize this individual and distinguish it from the 3-5 other Selasphorus hummers present. This bird spends most days, particularly bad weather days, sitting in the Almond Verbena at the front steps of the nature center and using the feeder on the adjacent porch. She has a full distinct tight triangle gorget in the center of her throat. She has rufous upper tail coverts that abruptly meet her green rump and back. The combination of these two features allows us to recognize this bird. Overall and otherwise she is typical female Selasphorus. She does have an un-notched R-2 which is her identifying character, but you would need bionic high speed eyes to see that. You might get lucky with a photo of her however. The first Saturday bird walk found a Winter Wren on the Wetlands Trail boardwalk. The bird walk this past Wednesday produced another Fox Sparrow, the third park record and the first record for a rufous-backed form. This bird was on the west line in a feeding area where a pipe sticks up from the ground. On the same bird walk we encountered 6 Nutmeg Mannikins at the rosebush on the Draper parking lot. This is a good year for Golden-crowned Kinglet with 7 being seen on the past bird walk.
