Hi Randy
It will be hot but an early start will get you in the high country where it
is cooler. At the basin all the way up the pinnacles trail acorn wps are
plentiful and noisy. Your best bet for scaled quail is along the roads and
at dug out wells. Phainoplepla are hit and miss..more common in Davis
Mountains...I have seen one driving up the road from the desert into the
basin. The Rangers can direct you to some spots in the desert for
hummers...I have never been there...but if you are up for a hike there is a
place about 100 yards north of the boot canyon campsite turnoff in boot
canyon where we saw 4 to 5 species of hummers including a blue throated 3
years ago. Near the horse corrals in boot canyon is reliable for colomas.
Townsends. Occasional Lucys Last time I backpacker up there in Sept I saw a
hermit in boot canyon and a painted restart has been there a few years.
At SE-1 campsite I had and saw a western screech owl outside my tent that I
think live there.

Hi All,We are planning a couple days in Big Bend NP this coming
week... I know mid July is probably not the best time for such a trip but we
have never been and this is the wife's vacation week. It is more of a get
familiar with the park trip than anything else, mostly driving through with
a couple short hikes morning and evening with a siesta between!
Target Lifer birds for me are Acorn Woody, Phainopepia, Scaled Quail, and
any Southern Hummers. Beth has gotten into Herps too if anyone knows a key
area for nonbirds... any suggestions would be appreciated. I will let ya'll
know if we survive!
