. Did some meaningful walks in Tahitian Village this morning as deer flies do not sleep in at my place. At ~9:35 I had a low flying STKI pass overhead twice near the north end of Kaneohe and just north of Moku Manu. Despite another almost two hours I did not see it again even though I drove nearly all of Tahitian Village. As I suspected these huge birds never left, but how can they remain so hard to see? I went twice over to the big hill on Kalama where I could view the entire area but still did not see it again. Tahitian Village is just flat filthy with Mississippi Kites I heard them calling all over the community, many young birds. At the north end of Kaneohe there is a nest with two recently fledged young nearby....If I had to guess I would say there are somewhere between 25-30 MIKIs around and maybe more. Did not see very many flying around and only two down at the golf course which is odd because there are literally swarms of dragonflies on the river. On Akaloa I had great looks at a male Hairy Woodpecker. Pileateds are found throughout. Saw 5-6 empids but did not stop to check them all out, also a E. Wood-Pewee and a Yellow Warbler. Most strange is that I only had one Pine Warbler all morning...Where are they? I did do Colorado River Refuge briefly but had nothing of note except a couple of empids, a Belted Kingfisher and a Swainson's Hawk overhead. Had 9 Western Kingbirds in a flock behind the shopping center where Lowe's is on the way home, that be a migrating group. On the drive to Bastrop just before sunrise , there was a flock of 5 Upland Sandpipers crossing 969 near Earhardt Rd. Have not seen my Rufous yet today but am just home. It was getting hot and quiet. ********************************************************************** Brush Freeman 503-551-5150 Cell 120 N. Red Bud Trail.
