These attacks often happen this time of year when young are dispersing. I
believe they are young owls just goofing around, to put not too technical a
term on it. I’ve done a lot of research on Barred Owls in Charlotte, NC,
(http://www.bioweb.uncc.edu/bierregaard/barred_owls.htm
<http://www.bioweb.uncc.edu/bierregaard/barred_owls.htm>) so I get calls all
the time from reporters about it quite often. After one story was published, a
rehabber emailed to say that he had a couple of orphaned Barred Owls flying
free around his house. In late summer or early fall he had to take them way out
in the woods because they started strafing joggers and cyclists going by his
house. They were certainly not misguided prey capture attempts, but just play
behavior.
