Hi, all!
With a report of a Long-eared Owl at McAllen Nature Center, Pat Heirs and I
decided to head over there despite the crummy weather and take a look; it
was still closed when we got there but we were able to bird the perimeter
and add the normal fare to the day list (we had a pair of Red-crowned
Parrots fly over in Alamo to start the day J). After enjoying three
American Robins flying overhead, we poked around the city park south of the
property and had a pretty Pyrrhuloxia catching a Southern Dogface for
breakfast, and a lady Ladder-backed Woodpecker was pretty cooperative for
pictures!
Then we headed over to Fireman's Park (one of Pat's favorite hotspots) and
saw some nice things, including a male Anhinga, which was new for her
hotspot list! Other good birds included a pair of Vermilion Flycatchers
(the female was actually singing and "displaying", so maybe it was actually
a young male), Solitary Sandpiper, Wilson's Snipe, Green Kingfisher, and a
goofy-looking Green Heron! After a bite to eat we headed back to the nature
center, which was now open, and we joined Ernest in looking for the owl (he
had flushed a Barn Owl but we missed that one) and got a pair of Harris'
Hawks instead. The icing was when Ernest said he had an oriole, which
turned out to be an Audubon's!
No owl, so we headed over to Santa Ana (with a quick stop in Hidalgo to
check on the Monk Parakeets), but Ranger Raul warned us that it was really
pretty muddy back along the Pintail Lakes Trail (Pat wanted to try for the
Sedge Wren), so instead we opted to try and find the Burrowing Owls that
were supposed to be hanging around in my section of the CBC area! We dipped
on that as well, but Pat spotted a couple of pretty Sprague's Pipits, and we
had a beautiful White-tailed Hawk show off on Tower Road.
