I type this message in awe, so I apologize in advance for any oversights or
missteps.
I started my Saturday with an abbreviated visit to Blucher Park for the A.M.
Bird Walk(awesome muffins Phyllis!). There I witnessed singing Worm-eating
Warbler(s), and also singing American Redstart. Simply put, way cool... There
were at least 3 Worm-eating Warblers at Blucher; 2 singing, which is quite
unusual in my South Texas experience.
Later in the day I met up with my wife Libby, and our friend(and Hawkwatcher
extraordinaire)Stacy Zarpentine, for a day of Birdwatching at Packery Channel
and Port Aransas.
Highlights at Packery included Chestnut-sided Warbler, American Redstart,
Pyrrhuloxia, and Scarlet Tanager. At the Audubon Outdoor Club's refuge at
Packery, we had Yellow-headed Blackbirds, and Rose-breasted Grosbeak.
Then we got to Port Aransas, and things went from amazing to stupendous.
16 species of Warblers, including Cerulean, Blackpoll, Blue-winged,
Black-and-White, Yellow-throated, Yellow, Canada, Louisiana and Northern
Waterthrushes.
Also at Port A: Summer and Scarlet Tanagers, Swainson's and Wood Thrushes,
Baltimore and Orchard Orioles, Indigo and Painted Buntings, Eastern Kingbird,
Lark Sparrow, Sora, Solitary Sandpiper, Semipalmated Plover, and Acadian
Flycatcher.
Raptors ruled on HWY 361 - the road into and out of Port Aransas. We had
Osprey, White-tailed Hawk, Crested Caracara, and the proverbial "icing on the
cake" - an adult male Aplomado Falcon! This amazing Bird was spotted just a few
miles out of Port A 'proper', eating an unfortunate yellow-feathered passerine
of some sort - just after 6pm. Obviously supper time, in the wonderful world of
Aplomado Falcons...
