Wind was strong from the east and south-east late this morning at Anahuac NWR. On the southern end of the Skillern Tract the trail south to the East Unit overlook, was just about empty of birds, or if there were any, they were lying low. However at least 20 adult Yellow-crowned Night-herons were far to the south of the overlook. We walked on the East Bay Bayou trail from the parking lot nearest FM 1985,for about a quarter mile where it was more sheltered. The following birds were the highlights. Warblers: 5 Northern Parula, 3 Hooded, 1 Prothonotary, 3 Black-and-white, 2 Yellow-rumped, 1 Worm-eating, 1 Common Yellowthroat and 1 Louisiana Waterthrush (working the bayou edge). Also noted amongst other species: 3 Yellow-throated Vireo, 2 White-eyed Vireo, 1 Red-bellied Woodpecker, 1 Eastern Kingbird, 6+ Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, 1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet, a Green Heron along the bayou, 1 Cooper's Hawk, 1 Red-tailed Hawk, 1 Swamp Sparrow, and 1 White-throated Sparrow. The male Cinnamon Teal was not seen from the East Unit overlook today. Not bad at all, considering the conditions.
