This would be very unseasonal as Alder Flycatchers are late spring migrants, normally appearing in May. It would be even stranger to have one singing. I have heard Willow Flycatcher sing in spring in the LRGV a few times, I can't recall hearing Alder sing. Wintering Empids don't sing in the LRGV, and migrants only rarely in my experience. If you have a smartphone you can record the birds if they are close using your voice memo app. You can see expected dates for birds using John Arvin's excellent checklist http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/publications/pwdpubs/media/pwd_bk_w7000_1033.pdf Mary Mary Gustafson Mission, Texas -----Original Message----- From: J Paige <jmartypaige@xxxxxxxxx> To: texbirds <texbirds@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Thu, Mar 6, 2014 8:12 am Subject: [texbirds] Alder Flyctcher? I was at Sabal Palm Sanctuary in Brownsville on February 19. I was down by the Rio Grande River when I heard this flycatcher. I only cauugt glimpses of the bird as it was moving from about quite frequently calling al the time. I did see it enough to determine it was a small empidonax. It sounded most like an Alder flycatcher with the buzzy fee-beo call which it was making over and over. Would this be a normal find at that time of year at Sabal Palm? I was an out of State visitor.
