Following up on what Richard Long reported from this morning about the great
gathering of waterbirds (including dozens of Wood Storks) fishing for easy prey
as the south part of Addicks Reservoir is drained.
Just before sunset tonight, I stood on Addicks Dam Rd (the levee) just east of
the South Mayde Creek outflow into Langham Creek. The levee path is blocked by
a locked fence at that point. The large pond immediately west of Eldridge is
now mostly drained, just a vast plain of dark silt with a few small pools. But
the even larger pond west of South Mayde Creek is actively draining, and full
of water birds. Needed more light to see them all! Will check back tomorrow for
peeps.
Access: Instead of parking at the north end of Red Haw or Black Haw, it would
probably be better to approach from Terry Hershey hike and bike path along west
side of Langham Creek (parking lot is off access road on south side of I-10;
walk north under highway).Question is, how long will it take to drain off?
