Although many know of the Wllisville rookery most seem to pass it by...they shouldn't. It is just off I10 east of Hou8ston across the Trinity River. Right now it is loaded with Egrets, Anhingas which are fairly close to the viewing deck, with the Roseates and others farther off in the southwest corner of the ;pond. Some are setting, and quite a few are still dancing for partners right now. The other site is the Chenier Plains Wildlife headquarts on FM563 about 3 mi south of where you turn off the interstate to go to the rookery. I was told this is to be the NWR 'showcase'. It is IMPRESSIVE. I am neither a fan of crowds, nor government extravagance, but thios place is a must see. On a 1/4mi 8' wide boardwalk you pass through a mixed coastal forest, then descend into a cypress swamp, and then through a marshland ending at the edge of Lake Anahuac. At the visitor center take a look at the Annahuac 50th anniversary book on sale there. I almost guarantee you are gonna part with about $30 for one of the neatest books I have seen in quite awhile. Both are good birding sites. So try the rookery, you don't have to have a ticket, and fight the crowds, and the scenery is as spectacular as the birds. And definitely go to the Chenier hdqtrs site. All of this is on a direct route to Smithpoint and/or Anuhuac NWR. A couple of snapshots (and that is all they are) of these two sites follow: The rookery first, then Chenier https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/rKiz0b344_S2fSuvrH8r3dMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=directlink https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/0lvcYD5gx7eso7-9Ef4K-dMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=directlink https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/ayvkDMS_-877rAGgDeyg4dMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=directlink https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/fd48qAca2s-Tp0c6WeNc9dMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=directlink -- Monte Phillips Tx cty The main difference between a cat and a lie is that a cat only has nine lives.
