1/21/17 Warbler Woods Bird Sanctuary Fieldtrip
Today we had an enjoyable bird walk with a total of seven birders, coming from
as far as Texas City. I began the eBird list at 0651 when a pair of
Great-horned Owls started counter calling. We began our walk shortly after
sunup and continued until about 1100. Our focus was on Sparrows, and we found a
total of ten species, including all three Zonotrichias (White-crowned,
White-throated, and Harris's), Chipping, Field, Lark, Lincoln's, Savannah,
Vesper, and Spotted Towhee. The Chat Pond yielded six of those, Lark was only
at the Old Barn, along with two others, Savannah and Vesper were in the 1 st
Field, and the Towhee was heard in brush lines along the routes. We totaled 32
species for the morning and had multiple encounters with Cedar Waxwings. At
Thomasu' Meadow we watched a flock eating the berries from the female Ashe
Junipers. We did not spend a lot of time in the fields.
I went back out to the Chat Pond in the afternoon and after an hour or so a
covey of 11 Northern Bobwhites came in to forage. I again had Harris's Sparrow
there.
