The annual event, organized by Astronomers Without Borders, celebrates the Universe in the spirit of the International Year of Astronomy 2009 cornerstone project "100 Hours of Astronomy." Astronomy clubs, science centers, schools, educators, and other astronomy enthusiasts worldwide are invited to reserve dates in April 2011 for public outreach, hands-on activities, observing sessions and more while sharing the enthusiasm with others across the globe. A growing number of global programs are scheduled for GAM 2011. The month kicks off with Saturn Watch on April 2/3. With the planet at its closest to Earth, it's a perfect night to admire the unequaled beauty of the ringed planet. On April 9 the Global Star Party will unfold as darkness sweeps around the Earth. This is the night to set up your telescopes and share the wonders of the sky with others. From April 10 to 16 it's Lunar Week as our gaze turns toward Earth's natural satellite, and many educational and cultural events dedicated to the Moon are planned. On April 17, we switch from night to day, dedicating ourselves to our closest star on SunDay. The month closes with a meteor shower—the Lyrids—on April 21/22. More events—including Remote Observing Programs and a Cosmic Concert—are to come as GAM grows with every group of people that joins us in the celebration of the Universe. John Dobson, popularizer of the widely-used Dobsonian telescope design that now bears his name, was interviewed in the first episode of a new series of webcasts, Astronomers Without Borders' Living Legend Series, on Saturday, November 13. Perhaps no name is better known in the global community of astronomy enthusiasts than that of Dobson, who at age 95 has had a lifetime of outreach and activism. His determination to bring astronomy to the people was a driving force behind the creation of the sidewalk astronomy movement. Pioneering new methods of making telescopes more accessible, Dobson paved the way for astronomy outreach regardless of access to professional facilities. This first Living Legend Series webcast streamed live online live from Hollywood, California, USA to a global audience. Dobson took questions from viewers around the world during the webcast. The recorded program is available for viewing at: Watch the Videos of John Dobson webcast<http://www.astronomerswithoutborders.org/projects/living-legend-series.html> This is the first of a continuing series of Living Legend Series webcasts presenting the people behind the names known throughout the worldwide astronomy community.<http://www.astronomerswithoutborders.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=429&catid=122> AWB December 2010 Events Cosmic Treasures: Online Observing Event with Virtual Telescope Date: December 1 Time: 22:00 UT URL: http://www.astronomerswithoutborders.org/projects/online-observing/495.html Cosmic Treasures is an online event giving you a unique opportunity of experiencing Universe through the Virtual Telescope at Bellatrix Observatory in Italy. From the Astropoetry Blog To Make My Mark on the Earth<http://www.astronomerswithoutborders.org/community/member-blogs/to-make-my-mark-on-the-earth.html> I abandoned my bed last night To make my mark on the Earth Imprinting my body against the grass Feeling The Force of the distant Suns I spun with the planet last night To feel the swing of the universe Understanding the continual reach for eternity Feeling so temporary from the Heavens I saw a fleeting star last night To love my insignificant worth Witnessing an immense energy Feeling like an outsider looking in I held your hand last night To appear stronger than I was Sharing what energy I could Feeling the Sun then about to rise I gave you all my power last night To give you a better Life Deteriorating into the Dust of the Earth Feeling like a dying star I exploded to my death last night To be buried in a Black Hole Adjusting into a new life form Feeling my energy unable to expire -- By Hilary Scheppers (California, USA) And It Will Come<http://www.astronomerswithoutborders.org/community/member-blogs/and-it-will-come.html>Oak leaves flutter to the ground, landing like silent birds. Do they feel the sun's oblique rays low in the sky? Do they pretend that summer's not quite gone? A whirlwind lifts the leaves. They shake and hiss across the asphalt like serpents warning us not to love summer too much. There's no escaping what's to come—the the wind that spits a thousand tiny pin pricks into your cheeks and a snake that laughs and shouts, “Told you so! Winter's here!” -- by Joan Chamberlin (Maine, USA) The Astropoetry Blog, an ongoing project of the AWB web site, provides a venue and a forum where the poetry of the night sky can flourish. Readers are encouraged to contribute poetry related to astronomy -- new or old astropoems written by themselves or others.
