In my experience with A4LD's which are very similar, most likely the OD band
is shot. Best to take it in and have it checked professionally. These
trannies are nothing like they used to be. A rebuilt will probably cost
8-900 bucks (not installed) and putting in a used (again in my humble
experience) ends up being a repeat process every time.
I've given away a couple of nice aerostars cause the cost wasn't justified
for the van. What stinks is that these 3.0 and 4.0 liter ford motors seem
to run forever.

Crown Victoria.
> It is a fully loaded model, with a V-8 and a four speed automatic overdrive
tranny which is called "AOD" and has an electronic speed sensor instead of a
speedometer cable.Whets happening is,it doesn't shift into OD anymore,it
just shifts out of third then begins going nowhere, you can rev the engine
and it just doesn't continue into fourth gear.
> He claims its been slipping for awhile going from 3rd to 4th but now it
has gotten to this point. We can leave the shifter in drive instead of OD and
drive it in 3rd,but when the OD would work it usually shifts at about 44 mph
so right now he can go to work and stay around 55-60 mph in 3rd but of
course the RPM is higher than it should be because the lack of OD gear.
> I had a general look-see at it and right away I noticed that the fluid
level was way above normal and a little foam was present on the
dipstick...and would you believe he had the tranny fluid changed a few years
back and has never added any...which means whomever serviced it overfilled
it.I must have let out a good QT and a 1/2 to bring it down to the correct
level. The fluid does seem a little dark, but doesn't seem to have a burnt
odor.

> Does anybody have any idea as to what could be wrong internally in the
tranny?I have read on the internet that these type transmissions with the
VSS "Vehicle Speed Sensor" instead of a speedometer cable can have this
symptom possibly from the VSS itself being bad.
> I am just hoping for some input that we can use that may keep him from
getting reamed to bad if he takes it to AAMCO or someplace like that.
> I have checked all the throttle linkages and they are adjusted correctly
and it has no problem shifting from 1 thru 3rd gear.
