Vertical jitter in a picture from a vcr usually means that something is wrong with the signal coming from the heads at the point where the tape first contacts the drum. This is easily verified by looking at the RF envelope with an oscilloscope. If the RF envelope is poor it could be caused by dirt on the lower drum, dirt keeping the guide post from seating, incorrect back tension, worn video heads or worn lower drum, locked guide post roller, misadjusted guide height or angle. If the RF envelope is good, suspect the pinch roller, dirty or worn control head, head switching point adjustment.
