Gary, I am working on a 27EXR25 with a problem somewhat similar. It would come
on and play fine for a while then it would go to blue screen with retrace like
a shorted tube. If left on long enough would shut down like a shorted tube. The
G 2 voltage was way down even with the socket off. I checked the 1k and it was
OK. The Jungle IC CXA1313S seems to be the culprit and is on order. If you need
info on the 1k by-pass test, you can find it on the NESDA of Ohio site.

with mutiple problems.

First, when turned on, there is one blue retrace line at the top of the
screen and the rest of the screen is black. After a few seconds, the
picture comes on blinking once per second or so. I adjusted the screen
control up and the picture comes on but the retrace line is still
visible at the top. If I turn the screen back down, the picture goes
back to it's blinking.

On the CRT board, I shorted out R701 (series resistor to heater) and the
result was the same. Also replaced the blue disc cap (680pF 2kV) to G2
and again, no difference. This set does not use the infamous CX1477AS
jungle IC. Does it sound like the CRT is on it's last legs (IK fault)?
I don't have a rejuvenator worth calling a rejuvenator- B&K 465) so
trying to restore the tube is not a good option, unless the customer is
gonna junk it anyways.

Next, I thought I'd check the caps on the power supply board for high
ESR. Good thing because I found a couple of bad ones. One, I am having
problems replacing. It is C651, a 2.2uF 160V, 105 deg C. When I
replaced it with another same spec but different brand, the set would
fire up with HV but before the screen would light up, I could hear the
HV shut off leaving only sound. Also noticed the sound pitch of the SMPS
alter to a much lower freq. oscillation, so I unplugged before problems
occured. Replaced cap with still a different brand and the set came on
and ran ok but after 2 minutes this new cap was hot enough I could smell
the plastic wrap on it. Put the original cap (very high ESR doesn't
hardly register on my cap wizard) back in and the set runs fine and cap
doesn't heat up. Is C651 a special type of capacitor? Should I just
leave the original in and forget about it?

Thanks for any help.
