Try this on for size, see if it fits.

There was a loud thump from the speakers when the unit was plugged in. 
The unit would not turn on. The 9V line did not switch on. We found that 
the CPU was not issuing a power on command - or anything else.

The cause was the Reset/IC002. It was holding the reset line low. 
Replacement of IC002 resolved the problem.
