[TechAssist] Sanyo 1985 projection TV PTV40 (ch# W8A-40000) snapped alot, then dead

This customer called and said his big screen would go "SNAP!", get 
"fuzzy", then OK.happened often. Finally it just went out. dead.
I asked how long it did this snapping thing go on.
"about four weeks"
"You ran it FOUR weeks snaping like that?"
"yeah...but we didn't know what the problem was, tho"
I asked "if the red light came on your wife's dash board in her car, 
would you tell her to just drive it till it quit?"
"Err...I see what ya mean."
OK... Heeeeeere's your sign....
Sounds like a HV arc. This is 20 years old. Anyone know anything about 
these old Sanyo projo's?
