If it looks like convergence try unplugging all cables from front convergence board to main boards and reconnecting before replacing any parts. These 178 and some 169 chassis were bad about tarnished connections on the pin connectors. There was a repair kit available. Symptom: Convergence intermittently collapses, picture bows in on top and bottom, picture pulsates, black streaking lines in the picture or TV intermittently shuts down and indicates error code 78 in the CTC178/188 chassis. Cause: Oxidation on the connectors going to the convergence generator board cause intermittent voltage, signal and data loss. Cure: Replace the connectors and headers on J/P8201, 8202, 8203, and 8204. All of these cables and headers are included in a kit, stock number 212169. Use the included wire ties in the kit to fasten the cables to the screw bosses as shown below. This will immobilize the cables preventing the oxidation from recurring.
