Friends, Thanks to all who sent posts on this problem. Turns out it was bad HOTs. He had put in two RCA originals; one failed, the other would have had he left the set playing. Finally, he pulled one from another set to put in. Set ran all night. Still cool this morning. The transistors look identical, according to my friend Charlie. Could it be a bad batch or, worse, clones? Gosh, I hate it when things like this happens.
