This is one of those portable DVD players with screen that parents use
to keep their kids quiet on long car trips. The solution was the IN/OUT
AV switch was set to 'in' instead of 'out'. I'm guessing that vibration
caused the switch to move over to the 'in' position in the first place.
It pays to flip switches sometimes.
