Sure sounds like an SSB. If it were me, I would try replacing the diode on the SSB first (due to cost), although I have not seen the diode cause that kind of a symptom, usually it will result in a dead set. You may want to first try removing the SSB and cleaning the connector/socket. Also check the feature bytes.
