I purchased this new or almost new DVD player cheap at an auction a few
months ago. Tried it out but all it did was display the word "HELLO" in
the display. No disc spinning, laser bobbing, drawer opening or any
other action. I had measured voltages and made sure the ground screws
were tight and that the connectors were plugged in all the way, but
nothing helped. In doing a bit of research on DVD players, I started to
believe that the unit was in some kind of quirky mode and that a RESET
would fix it. Never found out how to do that, so I shelved the unit and
forgot about it until yesterday.

Opened it up, stared at the circuit board for a few minutes, then
thought that maybe the 27 Mhz crystal might not be oscillating. Put my
frequency counter probes across the crystal and noticed there was no
frequency. Then I saw the digital display said "READING". Removed the
main processor board, soldered the crystal leads. Now works perfectly.
